About Yearn Finance

Yearn Finance is a decentralized asset management protocol on Ethereum that automates yield optimization. Its core business revolves around Vaults: users deposit assets, and the protocol automatically allocates funds across various DeFi strategies (lending, market making, restaking, etc.) to generate returns. The V3 architecture modularizes strategies and vaults, allowing third-party developers to deploy custom strategies while standardizing interfaces through ERC-4626 compliance. This reduces integration costs and enhances composability across the DeFi ecosystem.

The main pain point Yearn addresses is the complexity and inefficiency of manual yield farming—users would otherwise need to monitor multiple protocols, manage gas costs, and assess risks. Yearn solves this by abstracting strategy execution into audited, automated vaults, while its veYFI governance model aligns long-term incentives through token locking and reward distribution.

In the past six months (March–September 2026), Yearn launched yvUSD, a cross-chain stablecoin vault that aggregates yields across multiple chains with zero management fees. The protocol also faced a security incident in August 2026 when Term Finance's vaults (built on Yearn V3) were exploited for $8.5 million due to a custom governance wrapper—Yearn clarified that standard vaults remained unaffected. Additionally, YFI experienced significant price volatility, with a 44% weekly gain in early July 2026 followed by a 16.5% daily drop, reflecting broader market sentiment shifts.

Updated: Sep 2, 2026

Yearn Finance, a decentralized asset management platform, began as iEarn in February 2020, an automated yield aggregator for stablecoins across lending protocols. In July 2020, it rebranded to Yearn Finance and launched the YFI governance token via a fair distribution, marking a pivotal shift toward community-led DeFi. August 2020 saw the release of yVaults v1, introducing automated yield strategies. January 2021 brought v2 with multi-strategy vaults and the strategist system, significantly expanding capabilities. September 2021 introduced v3, focusing on robustness and multi-chain support. A major security incident occurred in April 2023 when legacy v1 and v2 contracts were exploited, causing ~$11.6M in losses, but current contracts remained unaffected. In 2024, a proposal to allocate 90% of protocol revenue to YFI stakers was introduced, reflecting ongoing tokenomics evolution. These milestones highlight Yearn's trajectory from a simple aggregator to a sophisticated, community-governed yield platform.
